Hot off the Press - The Oris Roberto Clemente Limited Edition

Baseball is a team sport. While individual performances can be identified, it takes the efforts of a full team to achieve the ultimate success. Teaming up with non-profit is something that Oris does frequently, also with great success. This time they have teamed up with the Roberto Clemente Foundation, releasing a limited edition timepiece that supports the foundation set up by the family of its namesake to carry on his legacy of humanitarian aid. The foundation, set up in 1993 with the mission “To Build Nations of Good”, focuses on education, service leadership, and athletics.

Roberto Clemente

Roberto Clemente

Clemente entered the big leagues in 1955 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team he would play for his entire career through the 1972 season. That storied career would include two World Series titles, twelve Gold Gloves, and 3,000 hits becoming the first Latin American player to achieve this career total. Shortly after his career ended, on a trip to oversee humanitarian aid, his life was lost in a tragic accident as the plane he was on crashed en-route to Nicaragua. In the years following his tragic death, Clemente was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, and his number 21 jersey was retired by the Pirates. The Commissioners Award, presented to an active player for outstanding work in the community, was renamed the Roberto Clemente Award in 1973.

The Oris Roberto Clemente Limited Edition release date should come as no surprise to baseball fans, as September 9th is Roberto Clemente day. The edition is limited to 3,000 pieces, one for each hit in his storied career. The watch is a unique colorway of the Big Crown Pointer Date, an Oris fan favorite, with a white dial, cathedral style hands, and pointer date complication. The date track and numerals hearken to the Pittsburgh Pirates colors of the Clemente era with the outer number 21 featured in a gold colorway, as a nod to the Pirates great’s number. The leather strap the watch comes with looks to be inspired by a baseball glove, with double stitching and a warm, light-brown color. The watch also comes with a nato style strap that matches the dial colors.

The version of the Big Crown Pointer Date is unique not just because of the foundation it is supporting, but also because of the white dial which is not currently offered in this line. The dial offers a very clean look with the classic steel case. The gold numerals with black minute track add a gilt feel to watch, which is fitting as the pointer date has been core to the Oris collection since the 1930s. The combination on a leather strap makes for an easy everyday wear, even if you aren’t a Pirates fan.
